which ISP is best for gamers?

Hi

Please accept my apologies in advance if this is one of those things n00bs
ask regularly, Ive been lurking here now for a couple of weeks but not seen
a similar type of post or a reference toa group FAQ.

Im sure this is one of those questions that everyone asks, everyone has an
opinion and everyone has different experiences of. So some of your
experiences may help me choose. Please keep it objective. I have no
intention
of signing up with Telewest (my local cable company - bad experiences with
them in the past).

I currently have BTinternet ADSL 512k - Ive had it for two years (out of
contarct now obviously ) and Ive got no real issues, its been great for
playing games. I would like to upgrade to 1 meg or even 2 meg connection so
that I can extend internet access to other PCs in the house without it
affecting my game playing.

I have a router, and at least 4 PCs requiring access.

Which ISP offers the best connection for the games player?

Do an ISP comparison on www.adslguide.org , Eclipse and Nildram should come
out on top. Steer clear of AOHell and Freeserve.

Hi Jester,
I would recommend Plus without a doubt - brilliant pre and after sales
service. Good access and their 2M deal comes with a 20:1 contention ration
(homeworker plus). Cost a bit but well worth it.

Something else to consider though: if you want to plays serious games and
you have other users in the house (I assume you have some form of home
network), you are going to have hassle in sharing the link and keeping your
ping times down. I have just been through this one and got a Linksys router
with quality of service option so that I can prioritise the traffic and give
a low priority to my teenage son's downloading of 'knitting patterns'.
Let me know if you need any more details on this.

have to cease your line with BT (bit of a bugger) and have it retested for a
faster rate - the maximum loss for a 1 and 2M link is 41dB. So you could be
off the air for up to 10 days.

Hi Mike

Thanks for the advice, all the reading round Ive done had pointed me at
Plusnet already and you have confirmed my thinking.

Ive just been though the Plusnet site and realised that Id have to drop my
BT account and then 10 days later I would have a 2 Mb Plusnet account. My
other option would be to transfer over to a 512 and then upgrade (costs Ill
have to confirm) 10 day downtime is bad news! I might have to speak to the
wife ;o)

Please forward details on the Lyksys router - it sounds like exactly the
kind of thing Im looking for.

Hi Jester

We had an existing ADSL modem/router - the Dlink DSL 504, which can take the
increase in speed (the maximum is 8M bps), but it had no way of throttling
or prioritising traffic. My son downloads a lot and this is a real pain when
I am trying to VPN into work.

So I got hold of a Linksys BEFSR81 router that has some Quality of Service
features that allows me to set port 1 (say) to have priority over port 4 (my
son's machine) Got the router, se it up, twiddled with the QoS settings and
things are hunky dory.

Hope this help, good luck with the transfer if you go ahead. The jump to a
2M pipe is really something, particularly with the low contention on the
Plus Homeworker deal. Incidentally, I have no commercial link or otherwise
wise Plus, I just think their service is excellent.
