Of the two brands, Netgear and D-Link, which has everyone found to
work the best with the least problems. I have a Netgear FVS-318 VPN
firewall router and have great results with it, but would like to add
wireless and maybe even replace FVS-318 with a wireless
firewall/router.

I have narrowed my choices down to either the Netgear or D-Link
brands for a wireless setup.

I'm having mixed feelings about Linksys regarding quality.

Their email support is fine if your questions are common newbie ones.

I have six months experience with Linksys equipment.

Own three WAP11 AP's. One v2.2. Two v2.6. Both v2.6 are having
dropout/reconnect issues every six minutes. The v2.2. does not suffer
from this. Buggy firmware has been sugested as a reason.

All my 15 clients use WET11. So far I have returned three faulty ones
and received replacements within a week. They were not faulty out of
the box. Good service but still annoying and time consuming.

On average I get a call from a user once a week saying that him/her is
unable to connect. Sometimes a reboot of the WET11 solves it.
Sometimes a reboot of the AP (?) solves it. Sometimes the setup on the
WET11 has gone bad, and a fresh resave of the settings solves it. I
guess bits are turning here and there for some reason. Sometimes a
factory reset and reconfig is nescesary. The users don't have access
to the setup, so they are not to blame.

/Jan

I have to agree, that's why I'm looking at the Netgear and
D-Link. I won't buy a Linksys at any price. Seems that since
the Linksys are cheap and available everywhere, everyone
thinks they are the best. I don't agree.

I've used the Netgear with no problems but never used
their wireless units. I've never owned a D-Link so I'm
not sure about them.

I was hoping to get some comments about the Netgear
and D-Link wireless units but I am not interested in the
Linksys at all.

Thanks for your comments.

I've been very happy with the reliability of my D-Link wireless
network. It was easy to set up and has been running for 6 months with
no problems. My only complaint is that D-Link keeps promising a
firmware update with WPA, but nada yet.

DI-614+ and 2 DWL-650+'s.

I'm very happy with my Netgear FWAG114 router/firewall/vpn/WAP and my
Netgear WG302 WAP. If you do have a problem you're on your own. Their
support stinks.

Netgear have habit of releasing multitude of wifi products and testing them
on the consumers.
E.g. the advise is not to attempt to upgrade the new DG834G with the latest
firmware, it is likely to make it inoperable !
Their support (in India) is useless.
Regards,
Martin

I have a D-Link DI-624 (Rev. C - single antenna) and love it. It's got
great signal strength, lots of security options, and the price is
reasonable. Only one negative about D-Link products - their tech. support
dept. and documentation sucks!

I just added wireless to my network with D-Link gear. So far it has exceeded
my expectations. Very good signal strength and reliable connections. It's
only been about a week so far but at this point I do not expect any future
problems.

Documentation stinks (CD-Based docs are better that POS printed docs).

Tech support is 24/7 but spotty. I would honestly say it's better than many
other IT companies, but that's not necessarily saying much. I think tech
support for networking equpment (especially wireless) is difficult because
everyone's situation is so unique. For instance, I was having a baffling
problem where wireless clients kept getting IP's assigned to them even
though I had DHCP completely turned off on the D-Link. I got escalated to
Level 2 tech support and we just couldn't figure out what was wrong. The guy
helping me was convinced there was a problem with my wireless router and
told me to send it back for exchange. Later it dawned on me that DHCP was
active on my proxy server and that's why IP addresses were still being
assigned. I talked to three or four people in tech support and there is no
way they could have resolved the problem because they had no way of knowing
I had two DHCP servers.

I've read the other negative posts about Linksys. I am speechless. I
support, or have supported all three brands (Netgear, D-link and
Linksys) on a large scale. I have a hard time believing that anyone
can find Netgear or D-link to be better than Linksys. I have no
loyalties to anyone just tons of experience.

Support - Linksys is 100X better than both of the competitors. In fact
I would give Netgear an F if I were to grade them.

Uptime - Once they are setup and left alone they are almost equal.

Setup - This is another strong point for Linksys! The others just
don't compare. Just make sure that the firmware is up to date before
you try to do anything.

Range - That is relative to the location and usage. Many diferent
models and features available to resolve connection issues.

Features - Again that is always difficult to say due to the number of
models available. However I found D-link to be very buggy on much of
their advanced features (i.e. VPN, Firewall and Routing) Netgear is
not much better. Linksys is funny with this. They do not have one
model that does it all. But they have many different features
available on many different models. However once you find the right
model with the features you need, you can be sure that it will work
properly or you can get support that is second to none.

Price - They are all fairly competitive. I tend to find Linksys a bit
cheaper off the shelf, but you can always find a sale or whatever to
prove me wrong.

WLAN PCI NIC - The best short-range Wireless PCI NIC out there is
actually made by Belkin (D7000 series G) and is very inexpensive. I
did many tests on throughput with many brands and for some reason the
Belkin Wireless NIC kicks butt over all the others. I have not been
able to put my finger on the reason yet. However I have not had to
contact their tech support, so if something goes wrong I may change my
mind. But no problems for 3 months found so far.

WLAN PCMCIA NIC - I am still not 100% happy with any of these yet, but
again I am using Linksys for now. I wish their drivers and software
were less buggy. They also take up resources that I don't like. Do not
even attempt the Microsoft cards. They are ridiculously buggy!

I hope that helps! I don't want to confuse you, I just could not
believe what I was reading from other posters.
