Hello, i have a 7 computer network running on windows 98
and windows millenium edition. I do not share internet
connections, only files and printers.
I have problems with file sharing because when i open an
explorer window for a shared folder in another computer i
can work normally for a while but then the window "hangs"
or "freezes" or it even crashes the computer.
I understand i must have only one protocol binded to the
file and printer sharing service.
My question is:
which is the best protocol for file and printer sharing
for a network that has both win me and win 98 computers?

There is really no "best" protocol, though it is important to pick one and
stick with it. Either TCP/IP or NetBEUI will work on a simple network.

ok. i've done all the protocol changing, and performance has improved greatly.
But on some machines the "microsoft network client" dialog doesn't appear on startup, instead the windows startup dialog appears, why is this ? and how can i get the "microsoft network client" dialog to appear on all machines?

Did you check each PC's network settings to see what the preferred logon
client setting is? If you want "Client for Microsoft Networks" to appear at
logon that must be selected as the preferred logon service.

the problem has been solved, some binds between devices protocols services and clients were missing on those machines, some needed to uninstall everything and then install it again, but now everything works fine

thanks a lot

Glad you were finally able to get it all figured out.

WELL, IM AFRAID IT ISN'T TOTALLY SOLVED, THERE IS A SINGLE MACHINE WHICH I AM NOT ABLE TO GET TO WORK PROPERLY, AT STARTUP, THE WINDOWS LOGON APPEARS EVEN WHEN THE CLIENT FOR MS NETWORKS IS SELECTED AS THE PRIMARY LOGON OPTION, I'VE TRIED EVERYTHING UNINSTALLING, REINSTALLING BUT NOTHING WORKS
In that particular machine, the links in my network places appear correctly and im able to print on remote printers and to access remote folders. I don't get what´s wrong.

In the first place, if "Client for Microsoft Networks" is selected as the
primary logon handler, you will ALWAYS get a logon prompt. That's what it's
there for. If you don't want a logon prompt you need to select "Windows
Logon" as the primary logon handler.

You may also need to see this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;152104

If you have other problems, it would help immensely if you could enumerate
your problems clearly and completely, not assuming that we already know or
remember what your past posts might have been.

ok. the problem is like this: even when the client for microsoft networks is selected as the primary logon option, it is "skipped" and the windows logon box appears instead of the client for microsoft networks logon box
I have some network functionality but the performance is poor, i've checked all the correct options in the networks control panel applet, and even tried deleting the registry entry "autologon" somewhere in the registry as you suggested in another thread, but the standard windows logon box keeps appearing

I tried installing the netbeui protocol in the same machine, just to see what happens, and even when i can't browse the intranet (because of the other machines lacking netbeui) the correct "client for microsoft networks" logon box appear

I don't know what´s wrong, hope you can help
