GOAL:
I'm always on the 23-28th floor of my hotel in Manhattan. I can log on
to various networks right outside the hotel for free but from my room
the signal is not very strong or disappears. I don't want to have to
sit outside my hotel on the sidewalk anymore.

Which is the Best CHEAP PC CARD which accepts external antenna and
where to find it?
Is a pigtail needed? Which Antenna should I get. I guess I will have
to disable the Centrino/TrueMobile stuff in the BIOS of my Dell
Latitude D400?

TIA

U dont need to disable it, but there may apear problems if your computer
trys to use 2 wireless lan @ same time, so beter disable it FIRST
about the card, at about 50$ are orinoco (avaya/lucent/dell), there are also
other cards at comparable price, so IMVHO best choice is oronoco
yes U need pigtail (MCCARD 2 N probably-depends of antena) (about 15-20$)
which can be 1feet or 8-9feet (30cm or 2,5m)
and of course antena (5dBi will be enought for U I suppose) I ve no idea
about it's prices in US

Is there a site that lists the various brand names used for Senao and
the Orinoco cards which have external antenna connectors? Does anyone
here know?

TIA

Yes. I've tried walking from one end of the floor to the other, back
and forth, wall to wall, omni-directional. Was able to log on a couple
of times but lost the signal within a few minutes. I have a Linksys
USB adapter but I don't see how that would help since the range would
be the same without a signal extender of some sort.

Hi again!

What a pity, the skyscrapers in Manhattan are much to high!

I'm sorry, I have no experience with wireless PC-Cards and
external antennas.

I only found this:

http://home.earthlink.net/~wifi-shootout/

That means it is possible!

Jimmy

What's about changing to a lower floor?

AP's aren't designed to project signal upwards, least of all trough all the
floors.
If you lucky you an antenna hanging out of the window might work..

Good price. I just got a new one from Dell for double that. Then a couple
hex edits to the orinoco software/firmware
so it looks for the dell branding and it's got Orinoco firmware/software.
