I am in Glasgow and am using Pipex, who were pretty good until they lost all
my emails at the start of their recent troubles three weeks ago. I had
recommended them to a friend - but advised her to stay away given how they
have become.

She told me during the week she had opted for virgin - but it is not set up
yet - and I sent her the complaints page from ISPreview where virgin
currently rule the complaints page.

Her priorities were low cost - and no set up fee, but she would want file
sharing, but hosting would not be important, and obviously any modem through
in or discounted would be beneficial. Can anyone say if she can still
cancel the virgin one as it is not set up yet - and recommend and ISP that
would be good for her?

Thanks in advance.

Not many ISP will do 'no set up fee' deals, and if they do they tie you down
for 12 months.
In any case you pay the 'fee' one way or another.
PlusNet has recently won awards for service and reliability and even 'the
best ISP on the planet' and their prices are one of the cheapest - £21.99
(or £18.99 without P2P and binaries).
My connection hasn't missed a bit since May installation.
If you / she goes with them use my id 'jerryw' as a referrer and save me few
pence, ta.
Regards,
Martin

I'm actually in the same postcode area and I'm also with Pipex. Admitedly
their recent email problem was a pain in the a#se but it seems to be fixed
and I've had no problems outwith that. I'm not trying to talk Pipex up
because I'm a customer - this isn't a case of "Pipex is great!" syndrome but
I would still recommend them . I would assume all ISP's have problems at
some time or another.

Cheers.

Some have no setup fee, and don't lock you in for 12 months.
However, they do take the fee if you don't subscribe for 12 months.

Anyway. I use Metronet. OK it has a setup fee of something like 70ukp.

However, it only has a 3 month contract and it is only 11.75
(10ukp+VAT) per month if you are a low user (under 200Mb).

As for mail; I would always recomend getting your own domain, and
hosting with anm ISP that does pop+webmail. I use Purplecloud.net.
That way you lessent the problems AND if you move ISP, you dont have
the hastle of a new email. I think ghoulnet.net do free mail
forwarding and web forwarding if you register with them.
