Hi,

I'm stymied by the 802.11b situation. Basically, if you
take the compatability list, and eliminate the TI and Broadcom
cards, then eliminate the cards that aren't actually possible
to find, what are you left with?

Looks like certain Netgear cards. Hmm, what do you bet they
changed their chipset to an incompatable one as well?

If you think of Linux, Prism2 chipset card is a must for 802.11b.

What about 802.11g?

Right. Exactly. But most of the cards that are supposed to be
Prism2 are some other chipset now. Linksys is Broadcom, D-Link
is TI... So... My question is, what card to buy?

For instance, if I try to buy a D-Link DWL-520, I'll end up with
a DWL-520+. IOW, pick the card for its Prism2 chipset and end up
with TI.

This already happened to me with Linksys -- Linksys WMP-11's are
supposed to be Prism2/Intersil .... But the ones shipping today
are Broadcom. So I have a useless card, despite trying to buy a
supported one!

Fair enough... What card? What model? What vendor? How can I get
a guarantee that if I order a card based on the chipset it's supposed
to have, and receive a card with a different chipset, I can return it?

Better yet, how can I buy a card and get it right the first time?

I've seen the drivers for TI, and that's good news, but
it is not a good reason for me to buy a TI card! No,
I want to buy a card based on it already having a mature
driver. What I really want to buy is card known to have
a Prism2 chipset. But that turns out to be more difficult
than it ought to be -- the cards I can find for sale, that
are supposed to be Prism2, are all something else in production
runs.

"Something else" means, something hostile to the linux user.
