Friend has broadband but can't see an icon in the task bar where he can view
the connection speed, bytes sent and received etc...the little double,
overlapping screen icon.
He has ticked the box - Control Panel/Network Connections/Right
click/Properties and tick the box next to Show icon in notification area
when connected.
Anyone suggest anything?
Its Telewest 256Kbps Broadband and he has Windows XP if that is significant.
Thanks.

So if he's using an ethernet cable from his PC to the Telewest unit, he'd
see information using the Windows Task Manager (ctrl + shift + esc) or
use ( start | run | taskmgr ) and look at "Networking".

Your remedy works with my Blueyonder connection and XP home (SP2) ----
suggest it is something to do with your friends set up

No, it's for any network connection.

Yes, it is 'aware'. ;-)

You won't.
AFAIK that icon is part of Dialup Networking.

Your friends computer is connected via Ethernet to a cable modem or STB, so
the computer itself is not even 'aware' that it even has an internet
connection.

Graham.

I had this happen before and wondered what was wrong.

No guarantees but here's what worked for me.

Remove the tick, reboot, then try setting it again.

I presume in my case there was some flag or corrupt registry key that needed
resetting and that's why this worked for me.

Hope this helps.

Stephen
