What's the point of 55MB/s wireless networking at home?

I hummed and hahed, should I buy the 55 MB/s wireless router and PCI card or
would the £60 quid cheaper 11MB/s do the job. Do I really want to stream high
definition video over my home network or is simple file and printer sharing and
Broadband connection sharing all I need.

Of course it was - 11MB/s is a few orders of magnitude quicker than my 70KB/s
broadband - no problem there. File and printer sharing are banjaxed by the HDD
seek times - reading a file from the remote computer seems just as fast as doing
the same from the local PC.

Are we being conned - 55MB/s may be required in a massive office network where
there is considerable server/client stuff going on and printer packets flying
around, but at home - no.

11 megabits (if running flat out) is 8 times faster than a VCD, and can
stream a whole DVD in an hour.

Depends on your use - of course if you only use the wireless for browsing
the internet from a 512k connection then its not going to be of much use.
There are other people who do a lot of big file transfers across the
network, and for that 802.11b just isn't quick enough. Moving from a 10Mbit
to 100Mbit wired network made a huge difference to data transfer rates.
You've also got to consider that with 11Mbit you won't necessarily get
11Mbit, just as with 54Mbit you won't necessarily get 54Mbit - if theres
lots of walls or its just a large distance then you'll be lucky to get half
that, so suddenly the 5Mbit throughput of 802.11b doesn't seem quite so
attrative.
If you don't need the speed then fine, stick with 802.11b. If you do any
amount of file transfers across the network, which many people do for
various reasons (regular backup to another computer for example, or playing
games, or moving music across, sharing CD images, big documents and
databases, and all sorts of other things people might do), then there is an
advantage to the 54G stuff. The range on the 54G is potentially better too,
which is a consideration for many with wireless networking.

us robotics wireless access point and pc card are 22mbps and usr provide
free upgrade to 54mbps.
with 11mbps, a typical rate as i have read for 802.11b is around 4-5 mbps,
and with 22mpbs is around 7-8 mbps.

How often do you need to do that in a hurry ?
( clearly you are in a big hurry, can't even wait for a spell check...)

For most domestic users the answer would probably be: almost never.
So 11b would be more then fast enough for most of us.

Martin

What do you mean, "Are we being conned" (sic)? Is the advertising
misleading you?

I brought 2 Belkin cards from Ebuyer for £37 apiece, ad-hoc networking
works fine.

At that price the decision was a no-brainer, even though we only use it to
share the ADSL connection.
