Tiscali are doing 3 x faster than dial up for £15.99. What an amazing rip
off this as you can get the real McCoy for £18.74 from fast4 for example

Did you not know Tisc are well known for being ripoff merchants just
like some of the companies they have taken over like Localtel only
Localtel was taken over by another company I forget the name now and
Tisc took them over .

Same as the NTL so called broadband service.

Why's it a rip off?
You *do* have a choice you know, you don't *have* to use them.

The fact that it is a broadband service, and the fact that it is only £1
more expensive than usual FRIACO based dial-up makes it quite an
attractive package.

You'd be surprised the amount of people i've spoken to to who would pay
£15.99 albeit for a reduced broadband service rather than an extra £1.25
or so a week for something like Plusnet at £21.99

But is still £2.75 more expensive a month, or £33 a year. Now if you
don't need the extra bandwidth and many people do not, then why pay
£33 for something you don't need or want.

Is this an option for those of us that have been turned down for 'proper'
broadband due to a noisy line? I'm paying £14.99 p/m to freeserve for 56k
dial-up, and would quite happily pay a little extra for a midband service
since I've only got Hobson's choice.

No, you have to meet the same criteria for Tiscali 3x as you do for any
other ADSL service.

I also fail to understand why someone for want to pay £15.99 for a 3x
service, when a 10x service is available for an extra few pence a week.

There's Fast4's dial up service for £8.99 which I can highly recommend.
£14.99 is far too much to pay for dial up these days. In fact Gioserve's
nightime 0000 - 0800 dial up deal is £0.00!! and no cut offs so ideal for
those long downloads from certain p2p progs if that's your bag!

While it seems less "value for money" than an 18-22 pound service which
has higher speeds, it might be suited to someone of limited means, who
doesn't really care that much about the speed but does want an "always
on" facility for a dribbling news feed, and IRC/ICQ/AOL IM etc... not
that long ago when NTL's I GB limit was being discussed, some lady who
is housebound explained that she used her connection for interaction
with friends. Not everyone has/wants webchat via webcam but an "always
on" that can be depended on and doesn't tie the phone line (engaged
tones) is something which some may choose... Peter M.

There are also family dynamics to consider.

I know people who had a bit of hassle explaining to their partners why
they wanted unmetered access -- why it was worth taking on a 12-month,
monthly commitment, and how it wouldn't really affect their
availability for family duties. (Yeah, right.)

Switching to a similar-priced product that's always on is easier to
justify than "I know you reluctantly agreed to let me have unmetered at
15 quid a month; how about I take on a new commitment which not only
will cost 5 or 6 pounds more, but means that I'll have even *less* time
available to visit your mother and cut the grass?"
