QHosts seems to be catching a few people out. I don't know if that might
apply here, I haven't looked at the details of QHosts yet...

I had something similar two days ago (not Fast4 though). I suddenly couldn't
get my mail, see anything on the internet, except Google. Another machine in
my house was fine.

I tried pinging domains, no joy. I was just about to re-install WinXP
(arrgh) when I tried pinging the IP address of a domain. It worked -
therefore a problem with DNS. Looked at my IP properties, and the "obtain
DNS address automatically" was unchecked and an IP address was in the
"obtain DNS manually" setting. Of course I set it back to automatic and all
was well.

But I wished I has made a note of the IP address, it might have given me a
clue as to how this happened. I believe that I'm fairly well protected
(hardware firewall and active anti-virus software), but could this have been
a malicious act on someone else's part?

Anyone else seen this?

Cheers

Nick

There is a worm doing the rounds which changes the victim's DNS settings in
order to force download of its payload. The sites involved have been taken
down so it should not cause any further damage.

NTBugtraq had the details last week.
