I've decided to go for a no money object net connection...

Not sure whether to go with ADSL or T1/T3 - not even sure if I can get T1
or T3 in the UK? is it an american thing?

what are my options?

Which is the fastest connection (all types) ? how much is it?

Give it to me straight, as I said no money object...

Is there any way I can get a contention ratio of 1:1?

Will i ever get a ping of less than 3 or 4 in a FPS game with these
connections?

Thanks
Domestos

I tend to work on
10k/year for 1M
16k/year for 2M
after that it's negotiable, so get a decent negotiator who is willing to
walk out the meeting telling the supplier he is not taking her
seriously. When he sees the commision disapearing in front of his eyes,
the prices will drop.

expect £25k/year (very)ish for 4M

You can go up to (and above I expect, but I've never seen it myself)
100M, and believe me, it's brillient being on the end of that kind of
link. I got one for one of my clients at 100M and just had to spend ages
testing it out properly

it's been a couple of years, but it wouldn't suprise me to find that if
you really, really wanted it you could get a 1G link by now

E1/E3 in europe

Many.

About 50 - 100Mbs ADSL/SDSL
ATM/Cellstream/Fibre 622Mbs and higher

how much is it?
If money was no object why are you asking? As good as your bargining skills

Most ISP's /Telco's have no problem with this

Assume you mean 3mS, the capacity/bandwidth of your connection has little to
do with ping times.

In short you would be wasting your money. With the internet, the performance
you can get is only as good as the weakest link in the chain.

I have access to an E3 pipe to the internet and sometimes (depending on what
I'm trying to do) it's not much better than a 56k Modem!

Besides being USA standards, they're slow speed lines down in the Mbps
ranges. The rest of the world has E1, E2, E3 (2, 8, 34 Mbps) for
those. If you want fast links, up in the Gbps ranges, you may want
fibre optic cicrcuits like OC-192 at 10 Gbps or OC-255 at 13.21 Gbps.

A circuit to a major ISP and then service from that ISP.

BT offer 1 Gbps circuits for distances up to 25 km. If you're
at that maximum distance, allow in the region of GBP 200,000 for
first year costs, but only around half that for subsequent years
for the circuit. Most major carriers would be happy to talk
to anyone who wished to pay for circuits of 1 Gbps and above.

> Is there any way I can get a contention ratio of 1:1?

That's up to you and the ISP you arrange to get the circuit
connected to. As you'll probably be paying the ISP more for the
Internet service than GBP 100,000 to 200,000 for the circuit to them,
they'll be happy to talk about any contention ration you want.

Bulldog4 is a good option if you're in Central London. See
http://www.bulldogdsl.com/bulldog4/index.asp for details

If you're not on Bulldogs LLU network you could try Easynet at
http://www.easynet.net/broadband/bro...ent.asp?id=561 Not
cheap though!

Figures I had a while ago suggested a minimum of 2000+ a year (their ADSL
offered up to 8 Mbps downstream and up to 750 kbps upstream), plus 1000+
for setup (ohm plus VAT, of course)...

Not forgetting the 300,000 to move home to somewhere they serve :-)
(Interest declared - I have some shares in Easynet :-)

Since you cannot change the speed of light down the fibre, then no, as
you'd need to be physically close to the games server to go down from
the 10+ mS that many outside London would see as a ping time (I'm a
distance away from London, but guessing someone in London will see
lower figures, since my PlusNet 500 k link averages 22 mS while the
faster link (1000 kbps) averages 28 mS (but appears to be routed via
Birmingham, Bristol, and Reading before London). Peter M.

PlusNet <http://tinyurl.com/24ymz> - I recommend them and save some cash.

No, time to get rid of them was in the past - I sold a portion at 2900p
and should have sold the lot, but they're still 'up' on what I paid for
them originally, and if I had sold all of them I might have lost 98% of
the sum. As it was I put only 20% into other shares which then slumped
and showed drop of the aforementioned 98% level. I am several thousand
up on the meagre investment of a few hundred quid, in spite of my loss
of more than a thousand... (The portion sold was limited, to allow me a
gain without any tax payment to make :-) Peter M
