What's the best way to go about studying for Networking stuff w/otaking CCNA, etc.

I took TCP/IP (graduate level) when I was studying for CIS degree. I
have mainly focused on programming, including database stuff so far.
My hands on networking experience is basically, setting up home
wireless network.
I know some Linux, not administrative level yet.

I checked CompTia's site for their certs exam to see which book/
material to get. I want to stay general at this point.

Any recommendation what approach I should take w/o costing me a
fortune to join schools like ITT. After all, I can stuff on my own.
Just need the right material to choose from tons of stuff out there.

The CCNA classes are the best.
Take the classes,...don't take the Cert. Exam.
No one is going to make you take the Cert just because you took the classes.
Many local colleges offer the 4 CCNA Classes at night.

I did register for the classes.

Yes. 4 classes. Level 1 and 2 were offered last fall - I didn't take
those; kind of wish I did - and 3 and 4 this Spring. I believe I have
the knowledge for 1 and 2 and so I registered for 3 and 4 and informed
the instructor about my background.
I should get a hold of books used for or equivalent to level 1 and 2
and read them. Do you know any link (free access) that may have
materials equivalent to level 1 and 2? I am a little reluctant to buy
text books used in level 1 and 2 because my checking at with Barnes
and Nobel - I called them - makes me think that newer version of the
author used in this school are coming out.

I thought the same. It was a mistake. I took all 4. I learned the most from
the 1st one,...I was amazed how much that I did not really know but thought
that I did know because I was the "smart IT guy" that had been "doing this
for years".

Take all 4,...even if you have to take them out of order.
