WGR614 router act only as an access point? No seperation of WAN and LAN?

Current network:

<---> PC1
INTERNET <----> LINUX GATEWAY <--> old accesspoint <---> PC2

<---> PC3

The linux gateway has 2 ethernet cards:
1) DHCP on the internet side
2) Static IP on the LAN side (192.168.1.1)

My current access point has a defined static IP: 192.168.1.10 there
isn't a LAN/WAN configuration.

PC1 is 192.168.1.5
PC2 is 192.168.1.24
PC3 is 192.168.1.100

Everyone on the LAN can talk to each other just fine, IE - ftp, samba,
etc. They are all on the same subnet. I require connectivity between
the linux gateway and the PCs on the same subnet.

When I replace my current access point with the WGR614, I can get it
to work in terms of basic internet connectivity using the following
configuration:
WAN side: static ip configuration, 192.168.1.10, dns server
24.94.40.62, gateway 192.168.1.1
LAN side: DNS server (dynamic IPs) w/ 192.168.0.x subnet

The problem is, the WGR613 is designed to seperate the WAN from the
LAN.

If I assign the WAN side to 192.168.1.10 and the LAN side to
192.168.1.11, (or any IP of the same subnet) I get complete
communication failure. In this case, I can only ping the WGR614. IE
- I loose connectivity to my linux gateway.

Basically I need my LAN and my WAN to be on the same subnet. Is this
possible? I need this device to act as an "access point" - not as a
router.

Perhaps I need to plug it into my network on the LAN side only?

Are you talking about the Netgear product? They seems to have 614 and
614v2 but there is no 613.

Let's see if I understand your situation correctly. In your situation,
you are using linux as a default gateway (.1.10) for Pc1, 2, 4.
The gateway itself communicate with the access point to get to the internet.

I do not understand the assignment of the "WAN side IP. ". Are you
refering to the public IP assigned to your accedd point by your ISP, or
the NIC of your linux?(e.g. eth1)

is it necessary to hard code the DNS? If you rely on the access point to
run DHCP, you probably can rely on the ap to get DNS setting from the
ISP. Are you sure the communication failure not related to DNS? And are
you sure that no DHCP running in your linux? (i.e. no two DHCP server in
the same LAN?)

Do you use squid or any other software in the linux gateway? Have you
check 'route -n' to see if the linux is set up probably?

As far as I know, WGR614 assign IP regardless if it is connected via
Wifi or wired LAN

If you like, you can communicate to my yahoo email.

Regards,
Anthony

For security reasons, I put my wireless "router" between my Linux firewall
and cable modem. I then use a VPN to get past my Linux firewall. I also
use 128 bit WEP. This way, should anyone break the WEP, they'd only get
internet access and not connect to my home network.

You're right.. It's 614v3.

I solved the problem.. Rather simple solution when you think about it,
but Netgear told me it couldn't be done.

I simply removed the WAN connection. I used the device as a dumb-hub.
IE, plugged the LAN side into my linux gateway and static IP'd
everyone.

There isn't any way to do it using the LAN and WAN connections.
