WG511 not working

Hello,

So far I tried two different WLAN adapters. First was the WG511 from
NETGEAR an d the second was the Fujitsu Siemens Connect2Air E-5400.
But I had no luck with these guys.
All NIC are PCMCIA adapters! The FSC adapter use the Intersil GT chip.
I haven't any information about the NETGEAR card.
I also tried three different Linux distributions SuSE 9.1, Mandrake 10
und Fedora Core 2. My laptop is a Yakumo QD (SIS Chipset and Celeron
CPU). I posted some information which seems important to me.

Some
- PCMCIA service is running
- I copied the firmware to /usr/hotplug/firmware (not sure about the
dir) without any effect to my NICs
- when i insert the card into my PCMCIA slot it doesn't appear a new
message in /var/log/messages
- my Linux doesn't seems to notice that a card was inserted or not
- there seems to be no difference between both adapters

I would be happy for any help !
Thanks !
Alex

Hi Alex,

I have a WG511 which works just fine on my Debian laptop. Unfortunately I don't really remember how I managed to
"convince" it to start (it was about a year ago). Anyway, I can give you a few tips:
- If I remember correctly, I used the firmware from the Windows driver (!), not the one from the net. The firmware file
is on the windows partition somewhere under c:/program_files/netgear/driver, and is called wg511.arm or something
similar. That is - if you also keep windoze on your laptop . Perhaps the one from the net works, too.
- You also need to load the Linux driver called prism54
- If your laptop doesn't notice when a new card is inserted/removed, check "/proc/sys/kernel/hotplug" - it should
contain the name of the program which is called when something is inserted/removed. On my laptop that program is a shell
script (do a man hotplug). If you're patient, you can follow what happens and which is the directory where you have to
place the firmware file.

See if this helps, otherwise I'll check my laptop configuration and get back to you with more details.

Mihai

For netgear use the madwifi driver. Google madwifi, click second link
for the madwifi FAQ. Click Item #2 Getting the driver. Follow
instructions. Worked first try for me (WAG511).

Thank you for your answers !

I have some new information related to my problem. Yesterday I tried
Knoppix 3.6. First with the 2.6 kernel. The result was the same like
in all other distros. But when I start the Knoppix with 2.4 kernel
something has changed.

Knoppix (kernel 2.4):

The 2.4 kernel seems to notice when I have inserted an adapter but
didn't get the correct vendor ID. I don't know why. Any Ideas ?

Today I did the same procedure on a laptop of a friend. Started
Knoppix with linux 2.6. And... It found the wlan adapter (both!). I
ran "cardctl ident", which returns "insersil" and "isl3890" on the
display.

So these are information to make all things more confusing. Any
further help is much appreciated!

Thanks !
Alex

PS: I take a look on the MADwifi driver now. Never heard of it before!

Alex,
As you i never get success with WG511 card, my card is detected with
Prism54 chipset.
I tryed with several kernel level under Debian 2.4.x, 2.6.8, with kernel
delvered with distribution then compiling myself latest kernel without
get sucess.
One thing that should be invertigate is, is cards that seams tested as
working was builded with the same shipset that i and you have.
As wou should know, Netgear sold 2 different harware version WG511 (v1)
and WG511 v2, and also for each model there is several country where
this card is producted with different firmware level.

Mine WG511 (v1) come from China and is in version 3, i bought 2 weeks ago.
All things can be seen at back side of the card.

Now i will try to use it with ndiswrapper module, i hope to found a
solution to get working wireless network under linux .

Sorry it was not a solution !.
