I must be missing something here....

Under what circumstances would it make sense to buy a LinkSys WET54G
Bridge/WRT54G combo vs just buying two WRT54G routers, when linking two
locations as well as providing an access point at one of the two locations?

The WET54G is more expensive that the WRT54G and less capable.

Isn't it possible to just bridge the two WRT54Gs while keeping one or both
operating as an AP?

No, the WRT54Gs don't support bridging. The WAP54Gs will bridge however, so
you could get two of those. They'll also bridge with some other APs that
support WDS bridging (just make sure if the others support repeating to turn
that off; it'll break the bridge if a client connects to it in my
experience).

Is it possible to use a WAP54G in bridge mode with the WRT54G? If not, it would
seem the solution is to use a WET54G and a switch on one side, with the WRT54G
on the other.

From the little I've been able to gather the WAP won't bridge with the WRT.
The WET54G scenario should work just fine however.

You'll have to go with the WRT54G/WET54G combo.

The WET54G WILL bridge with the WRT54G. Not sure why you think it won't. I
run it in my house.

The WET54G looks like a CLIENT to the WRT54G.

Now, if LinkSys would release a box/firmware that would do repeater mode, I'd be
all set.

You could do it with thre WET54G. Plug two into each other with a crossover
cable. One in Adhoc mode, one in infrastructure mode talking to the AP. The
third is in adhoc mode talking to it's WET54G.

Not clean, but it would wrok.
