WEP Wifi Configuration with mn500

For some reason my computer does not connect to through
wifi unless I change the Index Key to something other
value. For example, let's say I have the mn500
configured to use Index Key 2. I configure my computer
to also connect using Index Key 2 and it works like a
champ.

Now let's say the next day I come home from work and try
to connect to my home wifi and even if my Index Key is
set to 2 it will not connect, however if I change the
Index Key to 1 (even though the base station is
configured for 2) it connects. It's really strange.

My computer is an IBM t30 with integrated wifi running XP.

I connect to a wifi network at work as well and never
seem to have this problem at work. My work is set for
Index Key 1.

This configuration use to work flawlessly until I had to
reinstall the OS on my computer. Ever since that time
I've been able to switch between wifi networks with
having to manually fool around with the Index Key.

Any assistance solving this mystery would be greatly
appreciated.

Regards,

Peter...

Don't use the key, Peter. Just set one yourself, and you won't have the
problem.

Hi Chris thanks for the reply.

When you say don't set the key what do you mean? I
configured the base station to use 2. The problem is if
I connect my IBM to the wifi I have to configure the wifi
settings on my IBM t30 to the exact opposite of what it's
configured for when I connect.

As an example, if the wifi on my IBM is configured to use
2 when I first connect it does not work. I need to
change the config on my IBM to a 1 and it connects
straight away. Shouldn't it only connect using 2?

Thanks,

Peter...

sometime key indexes on non XP configuration utilities are one off from the
key index of a router or access point. some of them use 0 as a starting kex
index, others use 1. if you have one of each flavor, it would be one off.

I'm using the Intel Wireless adapter driver for XP
configuration.

Somehow, I don't think i'm being very clear. Here are
the steps on how I can easily repo the problem.

Boot Laptop.
Have a strong signal but unable to connect to network.
Config wifi settings to use Key Index value of 2.
I'm now able to connect to the network.
Shutdown and restart computer.
When I boot up I once again cannot connect to the network.
Config wifi settings to use Key Index value of 1.
I'm now able to connect to the network.

It's almost as if simply toggling the value somehow
refreshes the connection.

The troubling part is that I have the MS routed
configured to use Key 2, therefore I'm concerned that it
allows me to connect when my Key is set to 1. This to me
is a security issue. Yes, No?

Thanks,

Peter...

Are you using the native Wireless Zero Configuration included with XP or is
this "Intel Wireless adapter driver for XP" a separate Intel provided
utility? You should not have this problem using the native WZC to configure
your wireless settings.
