Does anyone have any correct figures for how long it would take to break
into a 128bit WEP encrypted network?

I know everyone says that WEP is not secure, but I guess not many things are
secure if enough time is taken to crack it.

So does anyone have any idea how many hours, days or weeks on average that
would need to be spent to gain access?

How much knowledge would be needed to break the encryption, or is there
software that would do it for you... and in how long a time?

Jim

So is there software that will do it? So Joe Bloggs down the road who knows
'Sweet FA' can still get in, in 4 hours? Or are we talking someone who has
a little more skill... If there is software available that will crack it in
four hours, where is it and whats it called? I want to try and hack into my
own network.....

Yep. Mainly traffic sniffing.

Only software I saw was Linux only but doesn't mean to say there's not
a Windows version. Netstumbler can tell you what access point is being
used and you can try default settings to see if you can access the web
interface.

Find it yourself. No guarantee as to you being genuine.

Oh I'm genuine right enough. What makes me laugh is that these newsgroups
are full of people spouting off about how weak WEP encryption is, but when
you challenge them, they don't offer any hard evidence to back up their
statement. So until someone proves otherwise, I will assume that 256bit
WEP is reasonably secure, and that any idle tittle tattle discussed in these
groups, is nothing more than that.
