WEP password not recognised

I'm trying to set up my partners new company laptop to connect to the
Wireless network running in the house. Between myself and flatmate we've
already got two PCs and two laptops that can connect but this laptop doesn't
like the password for the WEP.

The router is a Buffalo AirStation G54 and is set with Network Auth as
WPA-PSK and I'm using a 10 character key. It is also using TKIP encryption.

The laptop is running Win XP Pro 2002 Version, SP1. The wireless card is an
Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG running v 9.0.0.61 driver.

Trying to configure it using Windows, it finds the SSID for the network.
I've selected "Data Encryption (WEP enabled)" and entered the key in the box
and have unselected "the key is provided for me automatically". However, when
clicking to confirm I get the error:

"The network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your
network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 12 ascii characters or 10
or 26 hexadecimal characters."

Which is what I thought I was using - 10 hexadecimal ones!

Any clues, tips, advice?? Please!!

Thanks, Michael

From your first paragraph, you aren't using WEP; you're using WPA-PSK.
This is why your friend's laptop won't connect with WEP - it's the
wrong encryption! All encryption must be the same and all hardware must
support the encryption mode you choose. If WPA-PSK isn't available on
your friend's laptop, then its hardware doesn't support it. He should
check for a firmware upgrade on the card or use an external card that
supports WPA.

Thanks! For some strange reason thought WEP encompassed all the types of
encryption. Duh! Anyway, found a LAN cable and connected the laptop to the
net, downloaded the latest drivers for the Wireless Card and all working
brilliantly now. Thanks again.

You're welcome. Glad I was able to help and that you've got it sorted
now. Thanks for taking the time to let me know.
