Professional door rattler. I used to do that years ago for my larger
corporate clients. My favorite stunt was to use the security camera
to video tape the sysadmin logging into the server. I would then
playback the video and watch his keystrokes. Instant password. I
wasn't very good at "finger hacking" but my neighbors 13 year old brat
was amazing.

Unplug the laptop, and unplug the battery. Leave it that way for at
least 3-5 minutes. Plug it back together. It will work. What
happened is that your Li-Ion battery protection circuit detected a
power glitch that somehow made its way through the charger and shut
down the battery pack. It happens all the time, especially with
Compaq laptops.

You could go into a store and buy a copy of your favorite Linux
mutation. Fedex overnight? Remote install from boot floppies?

I found anything useful for Windoze. Someone ported Airsnort to
Windoze, but I could never get it to work right. It would spew
garbage or hang as soon as the capture file got larger than about
10MBytes.

but it might be worth a try.
You might also try running Cygwin-X which is a Unix environment for
Windoze with an X-Server.

Instructions for getting Airsnort to work on Cygwin:

I use the character based Cygwin on all my Windoze boxes (can you tell
I'm a Unix/Linux bigot?) but have never bothered trying the X-Server.
This config tool and security front end was recommended:

Is there any way you can download 500MB and burn a cdrom? See:
http://moser-informatik.ch/?page=products&lang=eng
which includes all these tools:
http://moser-informatik.ch/tools.html
That would preserve your Windoze XP filesystem. For logging, I use
SSLWRAP to build a tunnel to my office server and dump the capture
files there. No sense in carrying the evidence around.
Instead of paying me to save your ass, could I trouble you to report
back if any of this stuff actually worked? I don't have the time or
inspiration.
