WEP on D-Link DWL-122 and Netgear ME102

I am having real trouble setting the WEP encryption on these two devices and
I hope someone here might be able to put me right.

AFAICT, you set the WEP key in the ME102 (access point) by entering a pass
phrase. Cl;icking 'apply' populates the 4 key fields automatically but
immediately replaces them with asterisks. Although there is a 'manual entry'
option, typing any value directly into the key field produces an error
message.

On the DWL-122, you get exactly the opposite. Only the 4 key fields are
offered so there is no option to generate the keys from a passphrase (and,
even if there was, would it generate the same keys from the same
passphrase?).

This is really irritating and the 'manuals' in both products give no help on
this point. What is even more irritating is that I had somehow managed to
get this working but I can't remember how. I have added a new device to the
network so had to set that one up on the same basis - this is when I
discovered that I didn't know how!

Any clues, anyone?

TIA

Paul

What sort of thing are you typing in?
It should be a 26 charachter string, containing only hexadecimal digits
(0123456789abcdef) for example

When you autogenerate the keys, does "view source" show the key values?

Probably not (there may be a standard I'm unaware of.)

Actually, so far I have only tried typing in an all-numeric string between 4
and 6 characters long. I didn't try a 'proper' hex string. I don't recognise
the 'view source' command. Where do I use that?

Thanks for your interest

It would be in the browser you'r using for viewing the routers config
pages.
In some cxases, it will show the key.
(Ifg not using a browser, then it won't work.)
