Hello,
I have a Linksys WRT54G router at home that is the version 1.0. (the one
with all the LEDs). At work we have the version 1.1 (with less LEDs). My
question is that, at home I am able to use the menu to select WEP, but at
work I can't. Is WEP disabled in the 1.1 version? Also, how can I have the
SSID broadcast, but set up a password for people to connect?

Any help would be much appreciated,
Jay

Do you have the same firmware on both routers? If you haven't already done
so, I recommend that you upgrade to v1.42.2 on both boxes. Unless you have
a need to use the "ping hack", this is the best solution.

BTW - why don't you use WPA? I have the WPC54G card for my laptop and WPA
works flawlessly with the WRT54G.

If you are using Windows XP, you should have already of downloaded the
WPA patch. If not, here is the link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Now you need to configure your router and laptop card. Navigate to
your WRT54G configuration page (http://192.168.1.1) and select the
Wireless tab. From there, choose the Wireless Security option with
the following options:
Security Mode: WPA Pre-Shared Key
WPA Algorithms: TKIP
WPA Shared Key: 123456789ABCDEF0 (you choose this)
Group Key Renewal: 3600 (you choose this)

On your laptop, you need to configure your WPC54G to use WPA:
1. Click Start -> Settings -> Network Connections -> Wireless Network
Connection.
2. In the dialog box, click the Properties button.
3. Next, choose the Wireless Networks Tab and select the available
network (your network SSID should be here)
4. Click the Properties button
5. Change the following options:
Network Authentication: WPA-PSK
Data encryption: TKIP
Network Key: 123456789ABCDEF0 (must match the above value)

Click OK and close all of the windows. You should now be able to
access your network via WPA.

I hope this helps!

A late 'jump in'.
I have tried to set up a WRT456 Linksys Router/AccPoint with WEP and
(as it has the oldest firmware) it appears to not talk well with the
Linksys WUSB45g adapter. W/O WEP the signals are strong and consistent
AND (most importantly) internet access is fine.
With WEP (and trying both XP's managing or Linksys' adapter utility) the
addition of WEP seems to kill INTERNET access. Believe it is something
in the transfer... I used the paraphrase generator in the Access
Point/router.

But will upgrade firmware... see if WPA works then. Thanks.
