I got excited and purchased an advertised Orinoco card so I could hook
it up to a cAntenna witha pigtail and suft the nights away. I found
out when it arrived that it was a Bronze model with not external
connector for an antenna. I came back and asked for suggestions and
was told to buy a "silver" or "gold". I went back to ebay and
purchased a "silver" and was really excited until it arrived yesterday
and yet again, no connector for an antenna. Does anybody have any
definitive model numbers or names of the PC Cards that have connectors
for external antennas?

TIA

Thanks for the link which I followed but as with the other two that I
read up on before purchase, there is no photo which shows "this
connector" and I don't know if the previous message that I have to
"gently drill a hole is valid". I have even read the data sheet and
there is no mention of external antenna connections either.
I guess I'll drive down to FRY's after all.

Of course, Fry's doesn't carry Orinoco.
They do sell an external antenna from some brand of card, though. Not that
I'm interested in buying their antenna, but presumably the card would have
an external connector that you could connect your cantenna to.

Be very wary of purchasing new from shops because you'll end up with
the newer product which does not have the aerial socket and doesn't
look like the ORiNOCO Classic Gold PC Card.

The latest (new) Proxim Orinico Cards available from stores do not
have the antenna socket you refer to, I found out the hard way.

You may have to try and buy second hand.

ORiNOCO Classic Gold PC Card is the card you want, but you may also
like to know the Cisco AiroNet LCM352 has no antenna, but has Dual
MMCX connectors for you to connect your pigtal and external antenna.

Cisco AiroNet LCM352 is a higher power card 50mWatts, rather than the
Orinioco Gold card which is only 30mWatts, but Cisco card will not
work with Netstumbler, but Cisco is more sensitive.

ORiNOCO Classic Gold PC Card has been rebadged as follows:-

WaveLAN
ORiNOCO
Lucent
Dell Truemobile
Avaya Silver World Card part# 016064/B
Compaq WL110

the main thing to look for in all the variants is the shape of the
antenna end...the characteristic squared off thick rectangle and
antenna port on the end are a dead giveaway. the proxim variants'
antennae look different. if the antenna looks like an orinoco, it IS
an orinoco regardless of what sticker you see on it.

It depends want you want to do, Netstumbler above cards, otherwise go
for a Cisco.

It depends on the age. The Proxim web site changed within the past couple
of months. I think silver cards older than that (like mine) have the
external connector.

That's odd ... my Silver card has the plug for an external antenna

Look at the picture Andy Jones posted at
http://www.cyrusconsultants.demon.co.uk/compaq.jpg.

See the little round thing on the left? That's what was plugging up the hole
through which you can now see the antenna connector on these cards.

Doesn't you Silver card have a little round indentation where the antenna
connector shows on the two cards in the picture? With a pin or a needle or
an exacto knife or some such thing, you can pry the little cap out and
expose your antenna connector, unless I miss my guess.
