Hello. I have two computers, one running Win98, the other
XP Home. I just networked them (with a Linksys wireless
router) and they can both see each other, I can print
from one to other's printer, etc. I'm trying to share
music files between them. The files are on my XP D:
drive (because the total content of the music in those
folders is too big to fit on the C: drive). I've right-
clicked on the main folder for the music and checked
the "Share this folder on the network" box under
Properties/Sharing. The other computer sees this main
music folder and all the sub-folders in it but when I
click on a music files in the subfolders one more level
down, it says I have no access to these files. Upon
further investigation, it plays out like this:
If the files are in D:\My Documents\My Music\Folder1 they
are accesible on the Win 98 computer.
If the files are in D:\My Documents\My Music\Folder1
\Folder2 they are not, I get an "access denied" error
message.
It seems that I only have access so far down in a folder.
That's the problem. How can I make the other computer
access these files?
Secondly, when I copied one or two of these subfolders to
my Shared Documents folder (which resides on the C: drive
and apparently cannot be moved to the D: drive because
it's a Windows system folder) the other computer had no
problem paying the music in the all the subfolders.
Question One: Is the only way to access these files
putting them in the Shared Documents folder? My 25 gigs
of music won't fit on the 10 gig C: drive!
Question Two: Can you change the Shared Douments folders
to a drive other than C: ? (And will that mess up
Windows?)
Question Three: Why won't marking folders as being able
to be shared allow the other computer to access the
individual files in those folders/subfolder1/subfolder2?
Any thoughts anyone?
