Weird Speedtouch problem ....

Using a Speedtouch 570 (not mine) i am getting some peculiar going's on.

I can run IE and load a myriad of different web pages, but then when i
try to load certain one's such as (for example) www.virgin.net,
www.symantec.co.uk, www.stylexecutive.co.uk, the pages don't load (the
progress bar 'progresses' very, very slowly) and eventually times out.
This list isn't exhaustive, i will no doubt find others.

Of those pages that do load, www.google.co.uk, www.yahoo.co.uk,
www.plus.net, www.f-prot.com - they load quickly. A speed test at
www.adslguide.org showed a slight under performance (445kbps) for the
512k connection, but the address is quite distant from the exchange
which may have some bearing (?)

I have reset the router, changed the .ini file to reflect a lower MTU,
and run the router directly off a laptop with no know virus or spyware
infection.

I have checked hosts file on all PC's with no apparent issues uncovered.
Same symptoms no matter which machine.

Any ideas why some sites works and others don't?

I thought a possible 'bad' IP address being blocked due to a previous
spammer (this is all happening on a newly activated account) but then
the actual provider's home page, virgin.net can't be loaded. They
wouldn't block their own range would they??

Can you borrow a different modem/router from a friend and test that?
Similarly can you test your router on another connection? It will tell
you if your router is at fault or if there is some kind of routing
problem somewhere.

If you have any antivirus/firewall/spyware filtering program which will
be affecting your Internet connection then turn it off. Run your computer
with nothing open (kill everything through ctrl+atl+del) and see if you
get the problem. If you kill things one by one whilst testing and it
clears up at some stage then you'll know the culprit.

Other things include updating the firmware on your router (or reflashing
the latest version if you are up to date.

Gonna be doing that over next couple of days, fingers crossed.
2nd time i've been in this position recently, needing a spare!
Time to make an inexpensive purchase on Ebuyer/Ebay methinks!

The funny thing is, the same problems occurred when i hooked in an
'independent' laptop with nothing else on the network, so i figure the
problem lies with the router. I really can't see it being anything else.

It's been reset to factory default, so i can't see why there should be a
problem, there wasn't, that was, there wasn't before a virus hit this
network...

I suppose the firmware could have become corrupted somehow. Is there a
flash upgrade for this router? Virgin.Net have suggested it's an issue
with the NAT side of things....uttered something about DNS, and then
that they didn't support wireless routers.

See above regarding laptop. I know the laptop is working fine on my own
network. It only had NOD32 working, Sygate Personal Firewall (which i
did turn off) and Ad Watch from Ad-Aware was turned off.

The retailer from which the device was purchased should provide support
and firmware. I don't see any on speedtouch.com (I didn't dig deep
though) probably because different countries have different firmware.

Googling for "Speedtouch 570 firmware" (without the quotes) showed up uk
firmware on dslsource.co.uk here:
