Weird Speed Issues

I am on a MaxDSL connection, and, at present, having performance issues with it, thats got
me scratching my head in frustration trying to fix
I have, over the past 2-3 weeks, been seeing wildly fluctuating synch speeds, ranging from
as low as 2500kbps, to its "normal 6700kbps
The router stats below are fairly consistant, as is the actual speed at which i download
at, which is less than 2 meg

noise margin downstream: 7 db
output power upstream: 11 db
attenuation downstream: 33 db

noise margin upstream: 21 db
output power downstream: 19 db
attenuation upstream: 22 db

This is what i was getting just before a reboot
Upstream Speed: 448 kbps
Downstream Speed: 4960 kbps

After a system and router reboot it returns to its "normal" settings below
Upstream Speed: 448 kbps
Downstream Speed: 6776 kbps

Speed tests give readings similar to the one below
Date 26/03/07 09:53:33
Speed Down 1888.56 Kbps ( 1.8 Mbps )
Speed Up 375.92 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )

Firewall disabling makes no difference
One thing i HAVE noticed, however is that when i download something, the speed of the
computer itself goes VERY sluggish.
I run AVG antivirus, and webroot spysweeper as my main malware dectector program.......
with the latest defenitions, so i dont think i have a nasty on here.
I also dont think my ISP (Namesco) are throttling me, but the usual contention kicks in at
peak time, but doesnt improve at ANY time from the less than 2 meg speed

Anyone got any sensible ideas as to whats causing this slowdown?

TIA
P Fisher

So why do your headers say "Customer of PlusNet plc" ?

That sentence doesn't make sense. Nor would a sync speed variation of 4960-6776 kbps explain
your issues.

Which speedtest btw ?

Simple, i kept my email addies when i left Plusnet a while ago, and
cant be arsed setting up my email account at Namesco

Again................simple.
Before i had this problem, i used to experience slowdowns at peak times
If i downloaded at, say, 2AM i maxed the connection, getting the full speed
my line would allow. Now, howver, its a constant less than 2 meg all the time
day or night

Nor would a sync speed variation of 4960-6776 kbps explain

Why wouldnt it?
These obviously a problem *somewhere........right?

Which ones you want?
Thinkbroadband, Namesco themselves, Speedtest.net, kbps.co.uk
myspeed.visualware.com, Zen test downloads...etc, etc
A whole raft of them, i've tried most, and all report similar
findings

Looks like time for a new ISP in that case.

AIUI the ISP constrains the speed at which the servers send traffic
across BT's network to the BRAS rate - this minimises the chance that
the "last mile" can't accept the traffic. So end to end downloads tend
to be limited to this figure (as a maximum).

Get your ISP to check for a stuck BRAS profile. That said, if the sync
speed often drops below 2.5M then the BRAS profile is probably set at
2M. A regular reboot (at a time when you know the speed will be higher)
might fix it.

Is the sync speed dropping at a consistent time of day? If so you may
have a problem with interference - street lights, etc.
