Weird problem accessing TalkTalk emails from Outlook

I'm scratching my head trying to work out why one laptop will happily
collect emails from my colleague's TalkTalk account, and another with
identical settings won't.

Both are running Outlook (2000 and 2003 respectively), I've compared both
account settings and they're identical. And both are set to leave copies of
the messages on the server. So when I try sending test emails to the
account, the laptop with Outlook 2000 collects it, but the one with Outlook
2003 simply ignores it. There aren't any strange message rules, both are
set to view all messages, and there's no bleedin' sign of the missing
emails!

Weird.

I know this isn't the perfect forum for this question, but there are some
wise heads here and I'd be grateful for a few pointers. Can anyone suggest
what else I might try?

Cheers

It's probably not an option, but "scrap Outlook" is what I've suggested to
some of my clients in London when they have repeated daftness from MS
Outlook. Since they're planning to move some PCs round soon, I might be
able to persuade them that archiving all the mail and then restoring it on
the new PCs into MS Outlook Express might be a worthwhile option (as
they are not using other features of MS Outlook, just e-mail).

Download the free version of Mailwasher and verify that its seeing the
mail on the server...

If Mailwasher sees mail pending, delete the account in Outlook and start
again - I once had a similar problem with TheBat! (email program*) IIRC

PS: TheBat! isn't bad as far as email and security are concerned, but
you "lose" the risky html display behaviour of lookOut, whereby it only
shows images actually sent as part of the email, rather than downloading
them from a remote site.

I can see the mail on TalkTalk's webmail page, so I know it's there - that's
what is so confusing.

1) Try checking the date/time on the PCs.
2) Try installing the latest Service Pack for Outlook 2003 - you can do this
with Microsoft Update as well now.

As far as I am aware, there are no problems with Outlook 2003 (except it
shutting down on you unexpectedly - until you patch it).

OK, so verify that you can access it "remotely" via pop3 by using
mailwasher - at least that way, you are entering the account details
into a completely unconnected stand-alone program, that is not prone to
the bugs and vaguaries of lookOut.

Are you sure the email is not a web-only based account ?

See the first post in the thread - I can download all the emails from one
laptop running Outlook 2000 (set to leave message on the server) but the
second laptop with Outlook 2003 doesn't download them, despite the settings
being, on the face of it, identical.
