Weird File Copy Problem

I'm experiencing some weird problems on a older network..

It's a Novell network, with a few older machines. One is windows 98,
the other is Windows 2000. I need to copy a shortcut from a windows
2000 server (through VPN) to each of the 2 computers.

When I copy the shortcut to the windows 2000 computer it shows up fine.
When I copy the shortcut to the window 98 computer, the shortcut is
renamed shortcut.pif (instead of .lnk). The really bizaar thing is that
it renames my ORIGINAL shortcut to .pif as well. At this point I
stopped what I was doing because this seemed really strange and I needed
to find out if this was because of a virus or if it's standard Windows
98 behavior. Has anyone else seen this?

Jon
