If its from your browser, use Opera. Its far superior and you can turn off popups.

If it on your desktop then turn off the messenger service. (not msn messenger)

If that is the case, then you should scan your PC for
adware/spyware/trojans/virii etc. You've probably picked something up along
the way.

Go to Admin Tools/Services and look for the Windows Messenger service. This
is not related to MSN messenger.

If you disable this service the popups will stop.

As an afterthought, you may find that admin tools is not immediatly
avalible. Right click on 'My Computer' and choose Manage. From there you
will see the services menu

You can download free pop-up-stopper from WUGNET.com, (Windows User Group,
MS supported)
works fine.
Regards,
Martin

Stoping the windows messender service will cure the symptom (although
not the problem!)

Installing a firewall will fix the problem.

I also recomend a spyware / adware scan. Download a copy of the free
version of AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Popup stoppers? what a load of bollox. Not worth it... It's simple to do
things manually. So:

* If you run XP, just enable the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF)
(internet connectoid > properties > advanced tab > tick the checkbox). You
don't really need any other firewalls under XP, unless you're into bells &
whistles. I've tested McAfee Personal Firewall along with XP free ICF. The
funny thing was, ICF still logged some packets it blocked - AFTER McAfee's
who charge bucks for that. There's a cool app to view ICF's logs available
on the web for bells&whistles, btw.

* If not - NT4 or Win2K then yes, stop & disable Messenger service
(administrative tools > service > Messenger > press Stop & select Disabled).
Or, install a third-party firewall - nice thing to have anyway if you're on
a broadband internet connection.

* If you use a router to connect a home network, - hey, just block port
135/tcp and be done. You still need a firewall though, but hopefully you
have it in the router.

Disclaimer (Nota Bene):
Messenger service (Net Messenger) has _nothing_ (nada, zilch) to do with
Microsoft Windows Messenger or Microsoft MSN Messenger who unfairly are
often blamed over "Messenger popup spam". It's used legitimately by Admins
on the Intranet to send notifications or by printers to tell you your job
has finished.

-- I write this because I'm completely _pissed_off_ with stupid people
asking "how do I whack MSN Messenger" in vain hope that it would help their
"Messenger spam" problem. Doh!

-- nothing personal here.

Errrr, except that most popups are NOT from windows messenger, they're
popup ads generated by rogue HTML.

Whoa there boyo. That should read "unless you like being properly
secure". ICF is a fair enough firewall, but there are better ones.

Can't comment on McAfee, but there's plenty of web evidence that ICF
is not the best of breed.

If your router came with that port open, then send it back, the makers
have no clue about security....:-(

NO port should be by default open inbound. Nothing, nada, zip.

Absolutely right. Important distinction to make.
