OK I finally went wireless and switched from a LinkSys BEFSRU31
router/firewall to a LinkSys WRT54G. Pretty much from the get go I had
wireless access for my notebook and after doing some reading up on WEP I
believe I have encrypted my network... Some of my basic settings,
SSID Broadcast - Disabled
Wireless MAC Filtered - Enabled, Permit Only
Authentication Type - Shared Key
Firewall - Block Anonymous Requests
IPSEC/PPTP - Enabled (Do I need those??)
Security Mode - WEP
Default Transmit Key - 1
WEP Encryption - 128 bits 26 hex digits
Passphrase - duh
There are four (4) keys and I chose Key 1 and set that with my wireless
connection setup on my Windows XP Home notebook... No problems, the
WRT54G claims encryption is enabled and using "NetStumbler" for the
first time reports "CHAN (6+)" "Type (AP)" and "Encryption (WEP)" so I
think I'm OK.... I hope.
I believe a false sense of security is worse than no security at all so
I would rather do all that I can to make sure my wireless setup is
secure as I can make it...
I am only sharing a printer on my W2k box and a few folders. They do
not have passwords yet as there are only two people using the computers
in the house.... Up until my new wireless router was installed all sat
behind the BEFSRU31.
So am I OK or do I need a few clues slapped upside my head??
TIA
