I just obtained my Dell Inspiron 8600 and loaded up netstumbler...
problem is the damn thing is unstable as hell and dies every 3 blocks.

What is the best software that you have found for wardriving on a
windows laptop?

Also, since my wireless card is internal... Im not sure how to hook up
an intenna to this thing... is their such a thimg as a usb or firewire
antenna?

if so, where do I get it.

Another that comes to mind:
Boingo, not actually used it for that purpose, but it seems informitive as a
second scanner if Stumbler were to fail for me.

I would try downloading the latest drivers for your internal card if
available, or give another card a try, try a PCMCIA flavor that Netstumbler
will work with in Windows98.

As for USB or Firewire Antennas to hook up to your internal card..... no, as
far as I know Internals have their own built in antenna, so wont have an
external jack, my laptop that has an option for internal WiFi but does not
have an external jack, I dont know if other makes have external jacks.

If your not strapped for cash, why not try a PCMCIA with external ant
option? (defeats the object a bit)

Many wardrivers use a Linksys WUSB11 USB network adapter. It has an external
antenna and you can easily mount it on your car roof via a magnet or
adhesive. Works really well. Runs about $40 at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, etc.

Boingo works pretty well for locating hotspots, and has a directory of
available hotspots, so it's handy for that purpose. They also provide a
subscription package that is partnered with some other providers that have
good coverage in airports and bars.

The downside, since the subject is wardriving, is that there is no GPs
output, so you can't wander around and look at the results later.
