WAP11 + WET11 = no WEP

Hi all.

I've just been given an oldish WAP11 (firmware 1.3h - USB port) to replace
my ageing 3Com Access Point, and to connect to my other PCs upstairs using a
WET11. It all works fine with WEP disabled, but I really need/want WEP.
I've double-checked the passphrases, but the PCs attached to the WET11 still
can't see the network. Why is this?

One thing I noticed was that the keys created by the passphrase with the
WAP11 had spaces inbetween (xx xx xx xx etc), whereas the WET11 utility
didn't. Would this affect it?

Any other advice appreciated

Thanks

Will

I had a problem like that before. I used the actual code instead of the
paraphrase and it worked.

Could you explain Luis? The code for what & where?

On one of the devices, when you type in the passphrase, doesn't it show the
hexadecimal output?

In other words, you type "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy do".
Another window should show a long string of numbers & letters such as
"04BA00C3...". If so, copy that line into notepad and save the file to a
floppy disk.

Take that disk to each computer. Copy the line from the file and paste it
into the proper location.

Yes it does

I'm confused. The paraphrase generates a hex code on the WAP11. I enter
the exact same paraphrase on the WET11, and it generates the same hex-code -
surely I've done it correctly, haven't I? Or is Luis suggesting I type in
the hex code into the WET11 passphrase box?

Sorry for the confusing confused post!

There is chance that the paraphrase is not generating the same "exact" code
by both utilities. That's why you generate the code in the router... and
copy the code into the computers.

Good. Copy the hex code into a notepad file and put it on a floppy.

Nope. There should be a space for you to input your own hexadecimal code.
From what I've seen, its the same box that self-populates when you enter a
pass phrase.

Don't type the code in... too many chances for an error if you're not used
to hex. Just copy from the notepad file and paste it into the box. Less
chance for a mistake.

Well, you should be! The rest of us were born knowing this stuff! <BSEG>

Stay with it. One day soon it will all make sense.

Still no luck. It works for 64-bit WEP but not 128 - there isn't enough
room in the WET11 config boxes for a 128bit generated HEX code...

Very annoying

Have you tried doing a "cut & paste"?
