Has anyone attempted this yet? Of course, Linksys says a WAP11 won't work
with anything other than another WAP11 (regardless of version) but isn't the
BEFW11S4 nothing but a WAP11 with a router/dhcp service built in?

Don't judge an access point by its cover -- the WAP11 and BEFW11S4 are two
very different devices with different controller chipsets!

I guess a better question would be will the WAP11 repeat to anything
other than another WAP11?

I did, but didn't actually come up with anything that you could wrap
your head around? Does anyone have any specific examples?

I don't know about the newer version, but the old version could associate
with all the APs that work with the ATMEL utility "snmpManager.exe". Those
would include the Netgear ME102 and D-Link DWL-900 (probably won't associate
with the DWL-900+) and SMC2655. there is also a Belkin with which the
original WAP11 will associate as client.

Consider using one of the newer wireless Ethernet converters or wireless
Ethernet Bridge for your client.
