OOPS. Never mind.

Linksys Tech Support says WAP11 in access point client mode can only
talk with another Linksys!

So, What's a good strategy for connecting to my cantenna?

oh and it will talk to all the others using the same chipset and
branding family so for starters thats:-

Dlinks, Linksys, Netgear.

(not necessarily all versions in the range but some)

So I CAN use a WAP11 type thingee for general remote access? (or at
least high probability access?)

I liked the idea because they advertise WAP11 as 20dBm which is more
than I can expect from a Orinoco PCMCIA card maybe?

(When the Linksys Tech people told me I couldn't talk to anything
other than another WAP11 I paniced and bought an Orinoco card on
eBay.)

I'll be travelling in my RV & more or less wardriving with a fairly
good cantenna. I just want to connect my cantenna to my laptop in an
effective manner.

Wireless routers and bridges are so inexpensive I thought one of them
might be a good componemt.

Basically I'll be looking for libraries etc. to link to while
traveling. There's a university library about a mile from where I
live for example.

I'd appreciate any education you can give me here.

Sorry to be stupid. I did search before asking but found little I
understood to be germane.

Don't get hung up on power. You need to consider sensitivity too.

Here's what I used to do:-

http://www.nodomainname.co.uk/cantenna/cantenna.htm

Specifically, a USB nic inside a can:-

http://www.nodomainname.co.uk/cantenna3/cantenna3.htm

This was my favourite because it has a good NIC inside, no cable loss,
dirt cheap to assemble.

For fun comparison, I made a parabolic dish from Michaels template to
use on a WAP11 in client mode off a Netgear ME102.

http://www.nodomainname.co.uk/parabolic/parabolic.htm

Personally, if you're looking to be a client off access points, I'd
favour the USB route rather than use a WAP11 in client mode. That will
work with other AP's but not all, a wireless NIC will work with all.

David.

Many years ago, "Cantenna" was a dummy load produced by Heathkit. It was a
50 ohm resistor immersed in oil in a gallon can. It could handle a
kilowatt of power, up to a few hundred MHz. They were used by many radio
amateurs and others, for testing & tuning transmitters. I have one sitting
in my closet.

.....

David, Thanks very much for your help & especially for the URLs.

I followed up and learned quite a lot I think.

I like your USB idea and may move in that direction depending on how
my Orinoco PCMCIA works out.

Certainly the idea of using the stripped back feed coax as the probe
is a really good one as it'll minimize connector losses.

I may try that myself soon.

I may just cut the N connector off my pigtail & feed the pigtail
itself thru the can wall. Cool!

I've been pretty successful in using small brass compression fittings
for copper tubes as feed thrus in a variety of situations. I'll bet
that one with appropriate dimensions can be found for this application
as well.

BTW I'm using standard 1 quart paint cans for the cantenna body. They
have good dimensions. (About 4" in diameter & 3/4 guide wave long--The
gallon paint can is appropriate for 1.9 GHZ, about 6" diameter & 3/4
guide wave long.)

Anyhow thanks again! The web is great for this kind of thing what?
