Will WAP11 bridge to other mfg's AP?

Okay, another quick question that I can't seem to find the answer for.

I know that the Linksys WAP11 units will only act as bridges to other
Linksys units. Is there any way to get around that restriction (which I
imagine is probably an artificial one)? Specifically, I want to set my
WAP11 as an "AP client" to another manufacturer's AP. Is this possible?

I'm thinking that loading the AMTEL firmware (1.4J1) might do it, but I
don't want to risk an unsupported upgrade for nothing. Incidentally, does
anyone know if the 1.4J1 firmware fixes the "sleep" problem with the WAP11
v1 units?

Thanks,

Ryan

Not true at all, they'll bridge to compatible access points. I've
bridged to Dlink DWL900+ and Netgear ME102 for starters and also had
client mode and repeater mode interoperating with the same.

I have the 1.4j.1 running on 3 WAP11's ver 1.1 - all work great. Two are
set as point to point bridge, and the 3rd is a simple access point.

I do not see any "sleep" problems - or any other problems for that matter.

Ryan, you and David are both right. I've bridged WAP11s version 1.1
together and used one as a client to the other, but could not get the client
WAP11 to associate with a Proxim RangeLAN access point. The ME102 used the
same Atmel chipset as the original WAP11. I'm not sure if Netgear changed
chipsets when Linksys changed. Anyway, it is true that the WAP11 in client
mode will associate with some, but not all other access points.

Agreed that it might say that and Dlink also say that their repeater
only repeats Dlink equipment.

It's marketing speak for "it *will* work if you buy our kit!"

What they leave out is that their kit uses the same chipset as many
others and they just do a spot of badge engineering.
