Hi all,

I have a D-Link DW2100AP WAP which fits in with my existing network.
The manual states that it can act as a DHCP server for wireless
clients. However, is it possible to just let a DHCP server on a wired
client (namely W2k3 DHCP services) take over this role? I haven't
tested this yet as my wireless laptop needs reloading, I just
wondered.

Thanks,
Andrew.

AFAIK there should be no problem - when a machine is seeking an address it
broadcasts a DHCP request on 255.255.255.255 (all addresses). So any machine
on your network can be the DHCP server. Stating the obvious here but disable
the DHCP on the router :-)

yes - you dont need to use the DHCP on thw wireless AP - as long as
you have one DHCP server on your network

It definitely works: I was installing precisely this configuration for a
customer yesterday. 504 router connected to 2100 AP: laptop could get an IP
address over wireless. That was from the DHCP server in the router, but
there's no reason why a real server (eg W2K or W2K3) couldn't provide DHCP
instead.

As an added complication, I had a further two 2100s in bridge mode, with one
connected to the router and the other connected (via a switch) to other PCs.
They too got IP addresses, so DHCP works over a bridge. However it's prone
to failure: if the wireless link drops out, the remote PCs don't get IP
addresses and so can't even talk to each other locally, never mind to the
router. Safer to give those remote PCs static addresses for extra
resilience.

yes you can

when I did some testing with the 2100AP (which I think is a great AP
for the price) I disabled the DHCP on the server and let the Windows
2000 DHCP server dish out IP Addresses.

As DHCP is broadcast, your DHCP server on the wired network will
allocate an IP address to the wireless client.
