I'm totally new to wireless networking: I have two PC's on opposite
ends of the house. One has cable modem the other not. What is the
cheapest, mostreliabe method of networking them together? Do I need a
router or an 'ad hoc' system (I'm not sure what that is except its
done w/o a router according to a linksys box). What is the best
method to connect both to the cable w/o selling the ranch?

TIA

Probably ad-hoc. If you want a router - buy one.
The cheapest.. hm. maybe linksys or something?

Opposite ends of the house may be too far, depending on the size of
the house and the number and construction of intervening walls.
In my 90-foot long house, I can get almost end to end on the same
floor, thru a wall or two. If you have any doubts, try to borrow
some WiFi stuff (like a pair of laptops in ad-hoc mode) and map
your turf for range limits and to discover the best location for
your "base unit".
