want to go wired with a wireless hub - need advice

I am fed up with wireless routers! After having a very solid D-Link
wireless router that refused to let my work VPN pass through and an
extremely flaky Linksys router that passed VPN, but got confused and
stopped routing anything more times than I can count; I have decided to
go (mostly) wired. The mostly part is the problem and here is where I
need advice.

I plan to get a wired router and install wiring to the desktop
computers in the house. This router will also serve as the DHCP server
and the internet share connection (using DSL to connect to the
internet). I am not going to use a wireless router since I am most
interested in reliable connections for the desktop machines. This is
all setting up to add a big NAS and start to do some video capture and
streaming etc.

Here is where I need advice. Since I still need to have occasional
wireless access, I would like to add a wireless access point to the
network. To get reasonable coverage, I would like the AP to be on the
first floor of the house connected to the router by ethernet cable.

Since each computer connecting via the wireless will need to have an IP
address, will I have to enable DHCP on the wireless device, or can it
be set up to pass through the IP request to the wired router? Will the
machines on both networks be "aware" of each other for file sharing
etc? Does anyone know of a better way to handle this? Does anyone
have recommendations or preferences for hardware?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.
Bill

DHCP in wired router handles all dhcp requests, wireless needs dhcp turned
off, and have diffrent address then the wired router. I have a simular
setup but with 2 wired routers (linksys). 1st wired is 192.168.2.1 and 2nd
wired 192.168.2.2 and DHCP turned off... HTH good luck
