Thanks to all who gave me advise.

I have isolated the problem to a dodgy extension.

I now have a 15m extension lead running witha filter at the end into which
the modem plugs.

On my laptop , the modem connects everytime , however , on my friend PC , I
receive a Port is already open error 0633 and have to unplug from USb and
plug in a again.

I then receive NO Dial Tone erroor 680 and have to unplug the lead form back
of modem and plug in again. I can then connect.

Any cluse to this latets issue. he is using Windows 98 SE

Glad you have now found the problem.

No idea why it's doing that but does it work if you disable wait for a
dial tone in the settings.

Time for an O/S upgrade? I have finally given up on W98, upgraded PC
last week and was not sorry to see W98 go. I used to triple boot, now
down to dual boot (XP/Linux). Win98 was OK-ish but it has had it's day,
no chance of him upgrading?

Upgrade has been discussed , but he has some specialised software for his PC
that wont work under win ME upwards. This software also needs internet
access so thats a non starter.

The easy option then must be to dump the modem and buy a cheap router,
Ebuyer do a 1 port one for 30ukp or a 4 port for 35ukp. The built in
firewall on those would be useful to help keep w98 safe as well.

Sorry can't be of more help.
