Hello,

I requested a MAC so I could switch from Wanadoo. The one they sent
me looks like LLU999999 (with different numbers instead of 9s). Is
this a valid MAC? I've tried entering it in two different ISP
websites and they said it's invalid. Sites seem to suggest it should
be 10/12 characters, slash, five characters.

Thanks in advance,

Alan

Looks like your line was switched to their own service. Migrations from
LLU is not yet a smooth transfer (Bob Pullen, from Plus.Net, pointed me
to this: <http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/04/21/llu_emp/> ). You're
perhaps going to have to "cease" service with Wanadoo, wait a week or
two (rather than the two days mentioned on that article) and then be
able to sign up with someone else.

I'm assuming they are running their own service - it'd be interesting to
see what www.samknows.com says for your exchange (it should list which
LLU services are available, such as Bulldog, Zen, etc) Maybe someone at
some other ISP could say whether Wanadoo is using its own equipment or a
wholesale service bought in from some other service (I've seen something
suggesting Toucan uses Tiscali for Toucan customers). TIA.

See post from LLUman in this thread:

http://www.wanadooproblems.co.uk/php...opic.php?t=125

quoted below:
====================
Not strictly true ! I believe Wanadoo largely use Ethernet backhauled
Alcatel ISAM's whereas BT use a mix of Alcatel ASAM's and Fujitsu 2nd
Gen ATM DSLAM's. The actual DLM bit is a BT proprietary platform that
is DEFINITELY not sold to Wanadoo for LLU. Trust me on that one !

Wanadoo are using the Alcatel DLM solution I believe. The DSLAM's may
be similar, but the back end DLM algorithms are very different.

I work as a network architect for an ISP and am very involved with
both LLU and IPStream Max.
=====================

Can anyone expand on this?

I've just checked and the only other ISP using LLU on my exchange is
Bulldog who according to the ADSL guide are as bad or worse then
Wanadoo.

I knew my line had been "upgraded" to LLU. The mess that Wanadoo made
my connection and my account in the upgrade are the main reasons I
want to escape from them :-)

So it looks as if I'll have to cease first. It seems very wrong that
an ISP can mess about with your telephone line and as a result cause
you to lose money due to new install cost.

Thanks,

Alan

Ah well, it's a matter of opinion (just that a friend here in N Wales
has been on Bulldog for a while and has been pleased with the service
so it depends on a number of factors overall, I guess).

Not all ISPs charge the activation fees, so depending on which ISP you
choose, you might still not have that to pay. I know it's now 40 +VAT
so if you do pay a fee, make sure they don't add much on top!!

It would be the inconvenience of no high speed connection (and callers
getting engaged tones if you are dial-up) that most people would hate,
once they've had ADSL for a while. Good luck with going back online!

Plus.Net had started moving customers across onto LLU but have now put
in a facility to opt-out of having that done (which I've taken), their
change of plan was a result of customer feedback and comments from the
user group too... They've also allowed time for a customer to opt-out
between getting an e-mail about LLU and actually going ahead, so every
user will have a chance to decide before they get switched over. Also
for those wanting to stick with whatever they have running right now a
different opt-out stops a line from being put on DSL Max.

I've been one of the first to criticise some past decisions / policies
at Plus.Net but I hope this is a "new start" of taking feedback from a
broad cross-section of customers and not trying any radical new plans,
at least without plenty of discussion to see what pitfalls they may be
bringing upon themselves. Peter M.

If you can hang on for a month or so BT is developeing a seamless
migration tool for LLU users. I'm afraid I don't know anymore than
that but is was mentioned in a thread on a PlusNet group as they are
apparently going the same way (LLU where possible). I think this is
one of the few occaisions I'm happy that my exchange is lagging behind
(no LLU suppliers at the moment, but the racks are installed)
