Best Buy has a small FM transmitter made to connect to a computer's
headphone out jack. Made by Belkin selling for $29 before $10 rebate. Have
no idea how far the signal range is.

Here's a web link if you want more specific info. Wouldn't need any other
parts to make this work, but it only has a maximum range of 30 ft ;-(

This seems to be very low range.

Now, they all same FM transmitter. FM is really very short distance.
AM is usually a longer distance. Is it possible to get an AM
transmitter? Is it legal? where?

I have found an
AM1C - Entry Level AM Radio Transmitter Kit being sold at Ramsey
Electronics via internet.

Functionally it seems what I need, but the word "Kit" scares me. I am
not looking to solder anything. Anybody knows where to get similar
item but already assembled and ready to use.

Yes.
There are lots of sellers that sell these on ebay, and they will give
you a better idea of what product you may want.
It's basically just a little radio transmitter that will transmit a
signal to a walkman in range (in the US, all transmitters have to comply
with FCC regulations, and thus these are very, very low power.)

Alternatively, look up wireless headphones.
These may suit, though they will not work with your walkman.
