Hi

Does anyone know if Waitrose use spam blocking on incoming emails?
Reason for asking is that I'm trying to help an elderly blind gentleman
who is not receiving messages from a list he subscribes to. He can send
messages, but doesn't get any replies unless they are directly for him.
The list is set up so that he should get a copy of everything any member
posts.

It's complicated somewhat in that he uses a Braillenote, rather than a
pc, so I'm a bit stuck asking him to check firewalls and such because it
doesn't have any. It connects directly to the internet and translates
everything into Braille for him. Up until about a week or so ago he was
receiving list messages with no problem. The only thing I can think of
is that Waitrose may be blocking them at source.

Hope someone can help.

Cheers

I assume Waitrose have a helpline.
You could also ask the RNIB for help, they take internet
access for the blind very seriously, if spam blocking is in
place it could become a discrimination issue, apart
from raising it as an issue the RNIB can probably bypass
premium rate helpline call charges and get a corporate
policy response.
They probably will get taken more seriously than an
individual who is using equipment Waitrose are not
familiar with.
If you need any further help email me.

As far as I can see, Braillenotes use standard POP3 email protocols and
run WindowsCE internally. HumanWare who do them are on +44 1933 415 800.

I suppose a first check would be to see if the list messages are showing
in his Inbox on Webmail, if Waitrose support this.

Thanks ato_zee.

I've checked the Waitrose site and they offer an optional spam filter.
It's possible that he activated this himself and his mails are just
sitting in the spam folder. It's difficult to sort out as I'm trying to
help him on line and live in a different part of the country, so I can't
just talk him through it. I'm also not familiar with Braillenote myself,
either.

Thanks for your suggestion of the RNIB. I'm afraid close acquaintance
with that organisation has not endeared itself to me - they are more
commercially aware and political than they used to be, which is a shame.
The same visual aids can often be purchased elsewhere for a lot less,
and local groups for the blind are usually considerably more help for
practical things.

I'm trying to see if I can persuade him to set up an alternative email
address to see if that makes any difference. I'm still working on that.

Cheers

Thanks, Owain. I've suggested he does this. His Braillenote is getting a
bit long in the tooth, apparently, so it's not always too reliable these
days, although I've now managed to sort out ftp access for him using it.
Hopefully, he should be able to navigate Waitrose's webmail.

In the meantime, I've set him up with email on one of my domains, so we
shall see if that makes any difference. I have a horrible feeling that
it will boil down to his ancient Braillenote, which will cost about
£1,000 to update. Being blind is not cheap!

Cheers

Another useful group to post to is alt.internet.providers.uk - someone
in that group may know something about the service Waitrose provide
which isn't known here. Good luck.

My reply address is valid, but incoming mail is set to 'auto-delete'
so will not be seen. Please post replies to the group.

Thanks, I think we may have got to the bottom of it - Waitrose are
indeed spam blocking, but don't seem able to either whitelist the
required posts or put a stop to it, despite it being an "optional"
feature.

I'm trying to persuade him to set up an different email address.

Cheers all who responded.

They blocked the recent Tiscali "spams". I have a friend with a Tiscali
account and her emails to me, in that period, didn't get through.

I have a waitrose account. I also have a yahoo account. The yahoo one
downloads into my OE. If you were to set your friend up with a yahoo
account and then use pop mail forwarding into his OE you could get the
emails that way.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think he uses OE with his
Braillenote - I think it has it's own email program.

Hopefully, we have it sorted now by setting up a completely un-Waitrose
related email address.

Cheers
