Hi Folks
Not had any problems with my Linksys adsl Gateway WAG54G but noticed a
firmware update 1.02 I think it was and wondered if its a good idea to
go for it?.
I also noticed two versions of the upgrade Annexe A and Annexe B??.
Can`t find any reference to which Annexe? it is.
My existing version is 1.01.6 so not a vast upgrade.
"If it aint bust don`t fix it" as I`ve heard a few times.
Advice most welcome
Cheers
Steve

Annex-B is ADSL over ISDN which (AFAIK) is not implemented in the UK

That's right.

I suppose the best advice is "if it ain't broke" etc.

However, I expect I am like you and would upgrade anyway, just to see what
extra features I get that I will never use!

Been onto the Linksys web site and they quote their latest upgrade as
1.00.19 dated Dec 18th 2004 but my existing version is 1.01.6 dated Feb
09 2004 ??.
To had to the confusion the Linksys ftp site quotes versions 1.02.7 and
others.
If I do go for the upgrade and it goes tits up can I reset to factory
default settings or does the firmware overwrite that?

Yes, that is confusing and I will leave it to someone with specific
knowledge to advise you.

On the general topic of upgrading flash firmware, yes, there is always a
danger of disaster
1. if the firmware is inappropriate for the hardware
2. if the download is interrupted unexpectedly (say by a power failiure)

Indeed, and not only with firmware upgrades. Always a good idea to protect
any such equipment with an uninterruptible power supply. I learnt the hard
way, many moons ago in the good old days of DOS a system I had once
trashed its entire hard disk when the power failed while it was writing
something important to the disk, it took me three full days to recover
from it and I still lost 24 hours of data.

Yes I too found out the hard way trying to upgrade and flash the bios
on an old motherboard. I used the wrong bios and bye bye motherboard
hence my reluctance to upgrade the firmware. They do sometimes have a
reset button but I did wonder if the firmware upgrade would overwrite
the factory defaults rendering the reset useless?

You'd be lucky!
The problem is that all the reset button does is tell the operating system
to start again, but the problem with our scenario is that it is the
operating system itself is corrupted, your router no longer thinks it is a
router, it might as well be a toaster!

I suppose a manufacturer could put a fail-safe operating system in ROM and
some means of switching to it in an emergency, so the flash could be
updated, but in practise this is rarely if ever the case.
