W98SE and wireless network

I have setup a wireless router 802.11g with wireless
network cards also 802.11g. I have a couple W2K pro
computers that are working fine with DHCP setup on TCPIP
connection. I have two computers that are Windows 98SE
and the wireless card installs ok but I cannot get the
wireless card to connect to the DHCP server, which is the
router, so I always get an IP address of 169.254.#.#. The
other part of this scenario is on those W98SE machines,
they have onboard 3com controllers that will connect to
the router and assign the correct IP 192.168.1.# through a
cable. But no matter what I do with the wireless card, it
does not see the DHCP server. I can view the network
adapters in winipcfg and I can release/renew the 3com card
but when I try to release/renew the wireless adapter it
always comes back with the error, DHCP server unavailable
renewing adapter. I have disabled the 3com and still the
wireless never connects to the router. Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Samantha

What brand/model? (So someone can point you to the correct screens.)

So you have a DHCP server running somewhere. Are you sure it is on the
router?

Do you have good indicated signal strength? Many brands will show the
quality of radio connection, whether or not you have an IP address or
WEP key. Maybe you don't have wireless enabled on the WAP/router.

WRT54G is the model number.

fine. The signal is indicated as good or excellent. I
have DHCP enabled yet, I always get the 169.254
addressing. If I hook a cable to the onboard 3com
controller and specify DHCP, I can connect to the router
and get to the internet. I am thinking it might have to
do with W98SE and the wireless g technology but not for
sure.

My wireless router can limit the number of address that
DHCP can dish out. Can you change that setting?

Perhaps you could try releasing and shutting down the other
computers, to simplify the troubleshooting.
