Is there any sites for a basic home W98SE/Linux setup ie. the Win
NW is OK between my W98 pc's, but the Linux side appears to
be more difficult.

There's some Samba configuration info on this site, which may help.
Failing that the docs at <http://www.samba.org> are pretty good.

Well I've always found that it's getting the Windows machines people
insist on running properly integrated into my Linux/Solaris network to be
the hard bit But it depends on what you're used to.

As "Nig" said, check out the Samba docs, Samba is all you need to
integrate file and printer sharing between Linux and Windows. Make Linux
do the hard work, it's better at it.

If you have specific problems ask here. There are other groups which have
more Linux networking experts than this using them, e.g. uk.comp.os.linux
and comp.os.linux.networking, but questions about the Windows side won't
be over welcome there (especially on the international one). Try here
first.

Regards, Ian

I run Samba as a domain controller here (using e-smith) and rarely have
troubles connecting anything to it, be it Linux, Win 9x, 2K, XP. The
family have a shared area as well as a private area mapped, which only
they can access. Well, that's what they think anyway;-)

I hope the family do not read these NG's :-)

The only requirement I need at the moment is file sharing, and while
W98SE has it quirks sometimes, the Linux (Mandrak 9.1) setup
seems to want a lot more information to set up.

On the first page of your link I see the reference to eth0 & eth1 and as
I am using a genuine ISA based card on the W98Se and BNC (don't laugh)
and Coax cable but a PCI card on Linux.
do I need to make sure that the Linux eth0 setting is altered to reflect this.

On bootup of Linux PC the eth0 does not see any connections despite
a longish delay searching before giving up as no connection available.
"bringing up interface eth0"
"No connection to start"

ROFL. No they don't;-)

The reason the PC Graham has on that site has two Nics is that it's used
as an Internet gateway. Doesn't matter if you only have the one, the
Samba info is still relevant.

It's probably the fact that the machine cannot get an IP address, so the
card does not get started. You will need to manually configure it for
it's IP address and subnet mask, I think. Not sure where you set this on
Mandrake, sorry.

If you open a terminal or console window and type ifconfig <enter> does
it list the adapter but with no info?
