We recently installed Server 2003. Our W98 machines can
no longer use network neighborhood to browse the
network. I can find the servers using the RUN or the
FIND COMPUTER commands. The error message is "Unable to
browse the network. The network in not accessible."

This is a W98 SE machine. I am running WINS and AD on
the server.
Thanks in advance.

Are you using Netbeui? Server 2003 does not support this, so the clients
and the server will only appear in the same browse list if you switch the
clients to Netbios over TCP/IP. Netbeui and Netbt build separate browse
lists, and these cannot be merged.

Bill, thanks for your reply. We are not using Netbui.
We have tried installing the DSCLient patch on the Win98
machine, too. We seem to have run out of ideas.
Everything appears to be in place and correct, yet we
cannot see the network neighborhood. Any other ideas?

You probably need the patch mentioned in this article.

238853 - Cannot Browse Network Neighborhood if PDC Is on Separate Subnet
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;238853

Don't let the title fool you,...it applies to more situations than what the
title implies

I just wanted to let you know what finally fixed these
Win98 machines. We narrowed it down to the Domain
Controller Security Policy. The machines were logging on
fine, but when we sniffed the network, SMB requests from
the MBR were ret'd "access denied" at the same time we
clicked on Network Neighborhood. We changed the setting
under
Local Policies-->Security Options-->Network Security Lan
Mgr Authentication Level
--> SEND LM & NTLM RESPONSES

We didn't add the DSClient and this still worked.

Thanks again for all your help.

Yes. I saw that.

I checked that on ours, both the Domain Policy and the Domain Controller
Policy and that item is not enabled (not defined), yet all our clients work
fine. I checked it at all levels above the Domain Controllers in Active
Directory and it is still "undefined".

I patched our Win98 machines that were having problems and they work fine
now without having to alter any Domain Policies. I have never added the
DSClient either.

Interesting. Did you get the patch from Microsoft? Or
could I find it on the internet? I read the article you
mentioned. The trouble we were having was exactly as the
article stipulated. Maybe I should still get the patch.
What are your thoughts? Thanks. Lo

Yea, I had to call MS. They don't charge for the call if you reference the
Article number because anything patch or service pack related has no charge.
They give you a link to the patch in a email that contains a password to
open the archive. The patches have passwords to unzip them that expires
periodically. The reason they are careful about distributing some patches
is because they haven't been fully tested to not cause other side-effects,
so they only give them out if they are reasonably sure that is what you
need,.....hence the process you have to go through to get them. But it did
the job just fine for me.

The number I always call is 1-800-936-4900

Tell it relates to article #238853

Whether you have the DS client or not will have no effect on this.
Browsing is an NT legacy application and doesn't know about Active
Directory.
