Unable to backup domain computers (XP PROs) using the
server backup software. unable to access the remote
computer, or from the computer cannot backup to a server
folder.
Help!

Hi - my first question is, why do you want to back up workstations? In a
domain, all users should be storing data on the server anyway...redirect My
Documents to the user's home directory, either manually on the workstation,
or using folder redirection in group policies. Treat workstations as
interchangable objects, use roaming profiles, and life is a lot easier.
Backups are going to be easier, and a *lot* faster.

My work as the Lead IT Spec for the EL Paso,Tx VA rquires
that I do and test/try a lot of way of protecting
documents and ways get workstation back online fast. I
have a home network that I test id on how to do things
this is just one of them. What put this in motion was my
home workstation upgrade to xp pro went bad and I had no
backup, of the workstation (bad for me as a tech), this
single event put me on a path to fine out how to remotely
backup all workstation on my home network. As of today I
have 2-w2k3 server, 1-unix servers and 7-workstation
ranging from xp pro, home, 98, and ME as a home test bed.
Thanks for the input and any other information you can
provide.

Well, as I said, this is best accomplished by storing *all* data on the
server(s), using roaming profiles, and having identical hardware/software
builds on all workstations - no local admin rights, use group polices to
control what users can do - then you can swap out workstation hardware with
ease. Keep a couple of spares around; buys you time while you can rebuild a
failed workstation.

Well, we've all been there, I think. ;-)

Don't use NTBackup if you really want to back up workstations. Use third
party backup software that has a workstation agent. However, as I said, this
is not recommended practice by most IT gurus I know. One of the lovely
things about domain models is that you can centralize everything & manage it
from the server(s).

Keep all your workstations as identical in build as possible - OS, SP level,
application load.
