W2K server and winxp pro on one HD?

I have a 60GB HD with XP pro installed. (I have partition magic 8 also) Can
I partition the drive and install w2k server on a second partition and use
it for learning purposes? Or must I start from scratch-install w2k server
first and then winxp pro? Sure would like to avoid doing the last one.
Thanks

Robert,
I guess you do not understand my question. I know what VPC is . That is NOT what I want. I want to dual boot winxp pro and w2k server, but I already have winxp pro installed. I wanted to know if their is a way to avoid reinstalling xp pro. I just want to install w2k server on a seperate partition and dual boot so I can practice some procedures on a w2k network. I have 2 laptops for workstations. I hope I am clear enough ..
Thanks

if you have XP running and want to install 2000 server, you want to install Virtua pc 2004. For more and other information, go to http://howtonetworking.com.

Virtual PC is cool alternative.

If you still want to dual boot and you can create the partition, then you
can install Win2k Server for a dual boot configuration. Probably you will
have to copy back NTLDR and Ntdetect.com from the XP CD - see:

Hi,
I have gone to some sights, including MS and read about Virtual PC. I guess
I am missing the point. I want to have a small network to practice/learn
more/get comfortable with W2K AD and 2 workstations (my 2 laptops), My
desktop would be the server (hence , the dual boot) . I do have a removable
bay here somewhere, but I really didn't want to buy another HD. I just am
missing the part where VPC let's me do all of this and get the same
experience?
Thanks
Frank

in this case, you do need to install 2000 first and reinstall xp. For more and other information, go to http://howtonetworking.com.

On a dual-boot machine always try to install the most recent operating
system last, since it will understand the boot sector created by previous
OSes. If you cannot do this and are installing an previous version of
Windows OS later, then see Doug's last answer. This was what Robert was
getting at in his most recent post to this thread.

Hi Frank,

You can certainly do what you want to do using VPC (and you don't need a
second partition or a dual boot). VPC runs as an application on your
desktop. The virtual machine uses a virtual disk which is stored as a file
on your host machine's disk. You install VPC, create a virtual machine
(using the wizard) then install the server OS on the virtual machine. The
virtual machine and the virtual disk are simply files on the host drive.

With the default networking settings, your virtual machine will look
just like an additional machine on your home network. It does not run
instead of your desktop (as a dual boot setup would) but runs as well as
your host desktop OS. The server desktop appears in a window on the host.
You can switch between guest and host by changing windows.

Thanks guys, I knew about installing xp last, but was looking for the easy
way out. I appreciate all of your advice and I see that you all lean towards
older first is best, so that is what I will do. It's not that big of a
hassle and I will hopefully gain quite a bit of knowledge as I explore and
experiment with w2k server
Thanks again

With Duel-Booting, you can only one one at a time. With VPC you can run them
simultaneously. You can run as many at once as can be accomidated by the
amount of RAM and the load the CPU can take.
