W XP, W 98 with a Crossover Cable

I am attempting to network these two systems with a
crossover cable.
If I ping the 98 from the XP, and vice versa they are
there and acknowledge each other that way. However,
neither are showing up in the network neighborhoods. The
XP lists it self, but the 98 doesn't even find itself in
the neighborhood.
I feel like it is a settings problem, but I do not know
enough about them to do it.
I ran the networking set up several times, but there is a
problem with the spooler (what ever that is).
Can anyone tell me SOMETHING about the settings in detail
or tell me what the problem is? I've been to
www.practicallynetworked.com and www.wown.com and didn't
find anything to help me. Thank you!
Carol
