VPNs - Cable and ADSL matching routers

Hi,

I may shortly have one location with ADSL and one location with NTL cable.

I would like to be able to link the two together with a router<->router
VPN so that they are like one LAN (VLAN?); hopefully this would allow file
sharing, printer sharing etc. over the VPN.

First question:

are there two routers (one cable, one ADSL) preferably from the same
manufacturer which would be suitable for this application.

Second question:

if I set up this VLAN then presumably I would have to tinker with the
gateway addresses of the two routers so that there are two valid routes to
the Internet (I don't want both on 192.168.0.1) but be careful that
routing does not get confused; although there will apparently be two
gateways to the Internet off the VLAN, one will involve going out of
Router 1 to the Internet, back into Router 2 via the VPN, then back out
again. Scary, huh?

Cheers
Dave R

Oh, and if they both have VOIP ports then we can have free chats over the
phone :-)

Look at the Draytek range, they've got the 2600 series with built-in DSL and
I think it's the 2900 series for use with external cable modem. I would
assume they'd talk the same flavours of VPN and I think they both have VoIP
models.

The draytek site has extensive help including screenshots for settings
up Lan-to-Lan VPNs e.g.

I think you'd need to confirm that NTL will allow the required protocols
and packet types through their proxies before you buy any hardware. I
was under the impression that they didn't, regardless of that you will
find the speed less than impressive as NTL cable has a dire upload
speed.

Good points; I was going to check that the protocols were supported and I
have already encountered the dire upload speed.

I can always fire up the BT line and go with ADSL, I suppose.

However too busy homebuilding at the moment to worry about linked LANs.

Cheers
