VPN wth Cable Modem and router

We have a small home network of an XP and a 98 machine, connected to a
D-Link router and thence to the net via a cable modem. VPN works fine on the
XP machine, but on the 98 machine, it always gives the same error - 629
after spending a while verifying user name and password, I am then
disconnected.

Any thoughts anyone? I can't find ANYWHERE to set any timeouts etc. and the
connection behaves as if it were a DUN connection, which is confusing.

TIA
